who is on first, what is on second?

Viola: "Then think you right. I am not what I am."
Olivia: "I would you were as I would have you be." (III.i.148-149)

The statements are very straight forward, I think, because Viola is being completely honest when saying her line becayse she is not what she is portraying herself to be, a man when in acctuality she is a woman just like Olivia. Olivia is lovestruck, just as Malvolio is when he comes across the letter , by Cesario who is actually Viola (a woman) and puts Cesario on a pedestal because she feels that Cesario is her true beloved. Viola knows that Olivia is way off base becuase first off she is really a woman and secondly the Duke is trying to court her using Viola and the more Viola pushes the Duke onto Olivia the more infatuated she becomes to Viola.

  1. I agree Olivia is putting Cesario on a pedastal and before Olivia completely falls Viola is trying to will her away as best she can. unfortuantely, Olivia is comepletely taken and is lovestruck, or starstruck.

  2. I completely disagree.

Just kidding not really. But yeah i mean it is sort of obvious even if the deeper meaning and the other characters relevance (like for Malvolio )isnt recognized the quote is still easy to figure out.
Olivia wants Cesario (viola) to be in love with her even though he/she isn't. And if she actually knew what was going on..that he is a she..then she would indeed have her be what she wanted..which is a he.
    Does that make sense,
    probably not.

  3. I agree, this whole love triangle thing is getting very involved now. What makes it even stranger is that Olivia is in love with a woman, Viola, who is disquised as a man, Cesario. Also, Cesario who is really a woman cannot express her love for Duke Orsino because she is disquised at a man throughout the entire play. All of this in my opinion is just too involved and annoying. That is why I like the end of the play because everyone is finally able to show who they are and we are able to end all of this confusion.
